WCSO, KSP warn about phone scams

WARREN COUNTY, Ky. – Local law enforcement wants you to be aware of phone scams affecting the area.
On Friday, the Warren County Sheriff’s Office said it received two separate reports of texts from a number pretending to be the sheriff’s office. The Kentucky State Police Post 3 also said Friday someone is calling pretending to be a KSP trooper threatening an arrest if money is not sent.
Authorities with the sheriff’s office says the texts originated from the number 270-257-1217, which is likely a spoofed number.
The Warren County Sheriff’s Office says it will never reach out by text message.
Furthermore, Kentucky State Police will not inform you of an arrest warrant, and they will never ask for money or threaten an arrest over the phone.
KSP also shared 10 signs of a scam:
- High pressure sales or frequent calls are signs that it’s a scam.
- If the caller demands an immediate decision, it’s likely a scam.
- People requesting a credit or debit card or any banking account information.
- If the caller offers to send someone to your home or to overnight something.
- Something for free is usually a reason to be suspicious.
- Unresponsive to questions or too quick to answer by cutting you off.
- An investment without a risk.
- Will not provide written information or references.
- Not registered with the Attorney General’s Office.
- If it sounds too good to be true, it often is.
You can contact the WCSO, KSP or other local law enforcement if you believe you have been scammed. If you receive these phone calls or messages, you can contact the Kentucky Office of the Attorney General at 502-696-5300. You may also fill out a complaint form at ag.ky.gov/scams.
