W.R. McNeill Elementary honors local veterans
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Veterans Day is this upcoming Monday, and the community is getting ready to honor our vets tomorrow at the Veterans Day Parade.
One local school took the time on Friday to honor our veterans and invited Bowling Green native and Air Force Lt. Gen. Steve Basham to speak to the children of W.R. McNeill Elementary. Basham told the kids that they can do anything in the military, and honoring our vets is very important.
He even let two lucky students try on flight helmets that Air Force pilots wear when on missions. Another speaker, principal Emily Mills, says it’s important these kids know where their freedoms come from.
“We want to teach our kids while we get to do the things that we get to do while we get to come to school. Why they get to sit in these in the gym and in the lunchroom with all of their friends, no matter where they come from. And it’s important for them to understand the freedoms that we have and also how we got here while we have those freedoms, and while we get to keep those freedoms,” Mills said.
One McNeill fifth grader was also honored. Charlotte Holland won the county veterans essay for her grade, writing about the importance of serving our veterans and their families and will be riding in the Veterans Day Parade tomorrow.
