Veltkamp named starting quarterback for WKU Football
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – In Monday morning’s weekly media availability, WKU football head coach Tyson Helton announced that QB Caden Veltkamp will start in Saturday’s contest against Toledo.
After QB TJ Finley suffered a lower leg injury early into Saturday’s game in Murfreesboro, Veltkamp entered and excelled for the Tops, leading the team to a win by putting up six total touchdowns, including five passing touchdowns on 398 passing yards.
“TJ’s going to be out, probably for several weeks. He has a lower leg injury, so Caden will be the starter,” Helton said on the quarterback situation. “Caden did a really good job, obviously [at Middle Tennessee State University], and we’re looking forward to him continuing that momentum.”
The appearance on Saturday against the Blue Raiders marked his sixth time hitting the field at WKU, but when the Rockets come to town this weekend, Veltkamp will make his first career start.
“He’s going to have to go back out there again and continue to lead this team,” Helton said, “but no question in my mind, he’ll do that. We’re very comfortable with him being the quarterback and looking forward to him going back out there and playing.”
The 2023 Famous Toastery Bowl Offensive MVP and reigning Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, alongside the rest of the Hilltopper football team, will return to Houchens-Smith Stadium Saturday night for an exciting matchup with the Toledo Rockets, which is set to kickoff at 6 p.m.
