Unknown illness affecting dogs in some states, not yet reported in Kentucky
BOWLING GREEN Ky. – There is a currently unknown illness affecting dogs that is making rounds mainly in Oregon and some northwestern U.S. states.
Though there are not yet any confirmed cases of the new illness in Kentucky as it stands, vets advise caution and recommend not mixing dogs that do not already share the same household. The illness resembles kennel cough but can lead to inflammation of the trachea, among other symptoms.
Dr. Ian Johnson at All Cats and Dogs Pet Hospital in Bowling Green recommends getting all recommended vaccinations and not traveling with pets this holiday season.
“I think common sense is the easiest way to prevent disease. So if your dog is acting sick, don’t bring it around other dogs. And like I said, if you’re coming from a hot location, so look on the website and use common sense and try and keep your dog separated if you have to travel with them,” Johnson said.
