Two Western Kentucky University students rescued after falling off cliff

RUSSELL COUNTY, Ky. – Western Kentucky University officials confirm two students were involved in a rescue in Russell County on Sunday. According to the Russell County Search and Rescue two people fell hundreds of feet off of a cliff face.

Crews were dispatched to respond to cries for help in the low-gap area of Lake Cumberland.

One person fell approximately 150 feet, coming to a rest against a tree. The other fell an estimated 200 to 250 feet and was in critical condition.

It took several skilled rope rescue technicians, along with two EMS personnel, to scale the rock face to reach both victims.

EMS then treated injuries, including a possible ankle injury and facial trauma.

A spokesperson for WKU, Jace Lux, says “We are thankful for the efforts of all emergency personnel involved and continue to keep the injured students in our thoughts ad they begin the path to recovery.”
