Trump fires Bolton
(NBC News) President Trump’s National Security Advisor, John Bolton, is out of a job.
The president tweeted Tuesday that he “disagreed strongly” with many of Bolton’s suggestions and had asked for his resignation earlier in the morning.
Bolton quickly contradicted President Trump’s statement, asserting that he offered his resignation Monday night, not Tuesday.
Bolton was still scheduled to appear in a White House briefing with the secretaries of State and Treasury as of mid-morning Tuesday.
President Trump campaigned on pulling American troops out of foreign wars, while Bolton pushed him to take a harder line on conflicts with Iran, Afghanistan and North Korea.
The president has acknowledged their differences in the past, but their most recent rift may have been the tipping point: Bolton strongly opposed President Trump’s now scrapped plan to meet with the Taliban for peace talks at Camp David, just days before the September 11th anniversary.
