The value and meaning of Juneteenth
WARREN COUNTY, KY.- Celebrating Juneteenth, is extremely common understanding the meaning of Juneteenth can help maintain the value of the history.
For hundreds of years slaves were owned. After the Civil War President Abraham Lincoln declared that all slaves be set free. Despite the declaration from the president, many slaves had yet to be freed. It wasn’t until June 19th, 1865 that all slaves learned of their new status.
Juneteenth was celebrated for the first time by the George Washington Carver Center and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated in 2007.
Bettie Turner, vice president of the George Washington Carver Center tells us, “I believe in changes, but change it the right way. Let the history live, and what we are doing today is trying to preserve the history of this community.”
The celebration of Juneteenth is not over and there is more to be done to ensure that the history of Juneteenth remains intact for future generations.
