LOGAN COUNTY, Ky.- Multiple communities across south Kentucky are mourning the loss of a fallen hero who served Logan County for over four decades. His colleagues remember him as being a community-driven leader.

“Billy had a mission here on this earth and it got completed.” Billy Poole served Logan County from 1985 until 2026.

The former Adairsville Chief of Police, Russellville Fire Chief, EMS worker and Logan County Sheriff passed away following injuries sustained from a motorcycle and tractor truck collision May 29th.

Deputy Roger McDonald, a close friend of Poole’s, said Poole had a superior drive to serve his community. “I can’t say enough good things about Billy, he was just a good human being,” he said.

From putting out fires, serving in olive and blue, off the clock, Billy had a love for motorcycles that he enjoyed with Deputy McDonald.

“He decided to buy a motorcycle, and I already had one, so we decided to start riding motorcycles together. We put thousands of miles on motorcycles. Billy was an excellent rider. We had lots and lots of good memories.”

Riding his motorcycle, hobby that led to a phone call, deputy McDonald was not prepared for. “I received a call from up front, and they were needing Billy’s wife’s telephone number… and the first emotion was something’s wrong with Billy,” Deputy McDonald said.

Billy Poole had collided with a tractor-trailer truck on May 11th in Todd County. He was then airlifted to TriStar Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee where he later died on May 29.

“It was heartbreaking,” Deputy McDonald said.

Now the family of Poole is preparing to lay him to rest. His colleagues said that though he did not wear a cape, he was a hero for many. Even in the afterlife, Poole was an organ donor and was able to give to those in need.

“If anyone was in need, he was the first one to be there.”

One of Poole’s lasts posts on his Facebook was about motorcycle safety.

Deputy McDonald is holding on to the memories he had with his friend. He said if he could say one last thing to Billy Poole, it would be;

“Let’s ride,” he said.
