Teranga Academy changes its name to ‘Purples Academy’

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Bowling Green Independent Schools has announced that Teranga Academy has officially changed its name to Purples Academy.
The school will transition to its new name beginning in the 2026-27 school year.
The newcomer program first launched in 2022, designed to help multilingual teens with interrupted formal education into American schools.
According to a release, Purples Academy’s core values and mission will remain the same, along with the returning core staff members.
With the new identity, the school will also be changing its logo to match Bowling Green High School’s logo and have an updated Music Art and Physical Education system for the students, the district says.
It will also be implementing a new house system aimed at boosting student engagement, teamwork and belonging.
The academy is also welcoming in new lead teacher, Wendi Byrne.
According to the district, Byrne has previously worked as a special education teacher in Sumner County Schools and Gainesville City Schools, with experience serving on state assessment review committees and as an instructor with Pearson Connections Academy.
