Taking the first step, BRASS speaks on domestic violence
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – It’s an unfortunate reality for many people, abusive relationships. Though it can be scary, asking for help is the first step to freedom.
On the morning of August 19, shots were fired by Christopher Elder, striking and killing his ex-girlfriend Erica Riley as well as her mother. The shooting occurred outside of the Hardin County Justice Center where Riley and Elder were set to have a hearing for an emergency protective order. Before making it into the courthouse, Elder fatally shot Riley and her mother.
The Barren River Area Safe Space had some comments today on the situation, Executive-Director Tori Henninger sitting down with News 40 to offer insight. Henninger said that leaving is the most dangerous time for victims, the thought of losing control of the relationship driving the abuser to become unpredictable. Though it can be unsettling, Henninger advocated for going after those EPOs and having a well thought out escape plan which includes asking for help and reaching out to local resources.
