State officials announce jobs program for Barren County inmates

GLASGOW, Ky.- State officials have announced a new re-entry program for inmates at the Barren County Detention Center.

The Education and Workforce Development Cabinet, Labor Cabinet, Justice and Public Safety Cabinet and Department of Corrections are collaborating on the initiative.

According to a news release, the company, Johnson Controls, will work with county officials to reduce energy costs in county-owned facilities and apply the savings to a high-demand job sector skills training program at the Barren County Detention Center.

Eligible inmates will have an opportunity to gain HVAC training and receive a trade certification, creating a career pathway to re-integrate into the state’s workforce upon release.

The partnership is part of an effort among cabinet leadership to try and enhance Kentucky’s workforce by providing training opportunities to connect inmates with skilled jobs as they re-enter society.
