2 schools no longer on lockout due to potential hit-and-run, shooting

School Lock Out

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – South Warren High School and Rockfield Elementary School went under a lockout due to a hit-and-run and possible shooting near the school Monday, school officials say.

Both school offices confirmed near 1:46 p.m. that they are no longer on lockout.

According to a message to families from SWHS principal Matt Deaton, this incident was not on school grounds.

Deaton shared the following message Monday:

“We received word from law enforcement this afternoon that a hit-and-run and possible shooting had occurred near the school. Please be assured that this incident is in the general vicinity and not on the school grounds. At this time, there is no evidence to suggest there is any threat to the school.”

“Out of an abundance of caution, we went into “lockout” status and will remain in that status until law enforcement tells us the area is clear. During a lockout, students are able to move freely within the building, but we do not permit classes outside. When students need to leave the building, they are supervised by the School Resource Officer (SRO) or administration. We will continue to keep you posted and will notify you once the lockout is lifted.

“If you have any further questions, please contact my office at (270) 467-7500 or by emailing matt.deaton@warren.kyschools.us. Thank you for your support and assistance in keeping our schools safe.”

Rockfield’s principal, Brooke Knight, also shared the following message to families:

“Dear Rockfield Families,

“As always, the safety of our students is our top priority and communication with our parents/guardians is critical as we continue to work together to serve our students.”
