South Warren Alum picked in 2024 MLB Draft
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The 2024 MLB Draft recently wrapped up, and an alum of one local school heard his name called after his time spent at Murray State University.
Cade Vernon, a graduate of South Warren High School, was taken in Round 10 of this year’s draft after four years as a Racer pitcher.
The 2020 Spartan alum tallied 85 strikeouts in 90.2 innings pitched for the Racers during his 2024 campaign, and that led to him hearing his own name called by the San Fransisco Giants with pick 298.
After the selection, Vernon shared a message for local baseball players who also aspire to hear their name called in the future.
“You can get there. Like, it’s definitely possible if you put in the work, and that’s sort of the message I want to send to guys. Like, guys in the area, it doesn’t matter where you’re from, if you’ve got talent and you put in the work, you’re going to get the opportunity,” Vernon said. “What you say whenever you want to be when you grow up, when you’re like 10 years old playing baseball, you always want to say you want to be an MLB player, and to actually be able to potentially live out that dream is just unreal.”
