Shifting Sands Reveal Florida Shipwreck
Remnants of the 19th century ship were unearthed by erosion along Crescent Beach. WTLV's Jessica Clark reports.
(WTLV/NBC News) — Beach erosion has revealed a shipwreck on Florida’s Crescent Beach.
The remnants of the ship are believed to be nearly 200 years old.
Mark O’Donoghue spotted the first signs of the wreckage poking through the sand on Saturday.
“My wife and I walk the beach almost every day,” O’Donoghue said. adding taht he first saw “some timbers and metal spikes,” exposed in the sand.
By Sunday even more had been exposed, and he had a hunch that is was a shipwreck.
He notified the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program and they told him he was right.
Archaeologists were out Sunday and Monday documenting the site just north of the Matanzas Inlet.
