Bonfire safety amid fall burn restrictions

WARREN COUNTY, Ky. – After some decent rainfall over the past few days, Warren County judge-executive, Michael Buchanon, decided to lift the burn ban across the Warren County area.

There are still some restrictions on open burning, however. From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., you are not legally permitted to start any type of fire if you are within 150 feet of any tree lines or brush. Of course, with some slack now given to residents and in consideration for the season, News 40 decided to swing by Woodburn Volunteer Fire Department to ask about some tips for those of you who might want to take part in bonfires as is a typical tradition.

Speaking with chief Bob Skipper, he said firstly, make sure you’re a safe distance away from any structures or power lines. He also told us that he does not recommend using any accelerant for your bonfires, but instead using something that easily catches fire such as newspaper or small sticks.

Skipper also mentioned stacking your wood safely. While most people go for a teepee type of structure, Skipper told us he personally likes to go for a pyramid-esque build. The chief said it’s more stable and ultimately burns better.
