Rep. Guthrie speaks to elementary school students about goverment

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Rep. Brett Guthrie spent Friday afternoon with dozens of fifth graders.

The Republican stopped by Alvaton Elementary School in Warren County to speak to students about civics.

Ever since Guthrie was a member of the Kentucky Senate, he has been visiting schools in the area to teach youngsters about how government works.

The 80 fifth graders will be headed to Washington, D.C. later this year for a field trip, so Guthrie wanted to prepare them.

Guthrie said teaching children about social studies at a young age is vital.

“It’s exciting to see young people get involved,” said Guthrie. “As a member of the Republican Party, I think we need to have a better message for young people. All of the debt that is being driven by a lot of policies should be interesting to young people because they are the ones who are going to pay it off.”
