Potter Gray students participate in Derby

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Local first-grade students got to celebrate the Kentucky Derby in a unique way.

First-grade students at Potter Gray Elementary got to design their own horse from a pool noodle. They then got to race them around a track on the school playground.

Students from three different first-grade classes raced their horses with the winners facing off in a final to determine the class champ.

Students also got to name their horses before racing. They were excited to cheer on their friends and support everyone in the competition.

“Well, it’s a good way to celebrate not only the Derby, but it’s also a great way to bring our parents in and community members. And just to celebrate this time, it’s springtime. We have, you know, renewal of all things. And it’s just great to be able to get outside,” Keith Brown, principal of Potter Gray says.

Not only does this allow the kids to have a little fun, but it also teaches them about the history of a rich tradition in the Bluegrass State.
