Update: Police investigating shooting involving Warren County deputy jailer, suspect arrested

UPDATE:

A preliminary Kentucky State Police investigation has revealed that the deputy jailer was supervising a work detail in the area, when members of the crew were approached and confronted by an unknown male party, not affiliated with the Warren County Regional Jail. The deputy jailer requested the assistance of the Bowling Green Police Department due to the male’s actions and conduct. Upon the arrival of Bowling Green Police Department officers, police said the male retrieved a large rock, throwing it at the responding officer’s patrol car, damaging a window. Authorities said the male then, once again, retrieved the large rock and approached the deputy jailer and began advancing in his direction. Police said the deputy jailer fired one round from his .40 caliber handgun, however it did not strike the male and no injuries were sustained from the gunshot. The male ran to the edge of a bridge overpass, jumping onto the ground below, where he was taken into custody by officers with the Bowling Green Police Department.

The male party was transported to the Medical Center Hospital at Bowling Green where he was treated for minor injuries. He was arrested by Bowling Green police on the following charges: Assault 2nd degree, Criminal Mischief 1st degree, Fleeing/Evading Police 1st degree on foot, Wanton Endangerment 2nd degree (police officer), Disorderly conduct 2nd degree, resisting arrest, public intoxication, Assault 3rd degree (police officer.) Detectives with Post 3 continue their investigation into the shooting incident.

Warren County Jailer Stephen Harmon said in a press release that Deputy Jailer Chris Troutman, a four-year veteran of the Warren County Region Jail, acted in an appropriate manner when handling the situation.

“I fully support Deputy Troutman’s actions yesterday when he was forced to make split-second decisions that affected his safety, safety of other law enforcement officers, and that of the four inmates that he was supervising on the work detail,” Harmon said. “This is an example of the lengths that we are willing to go to in order to protect each other and the inmates in our custody.”

Deputy Troutman is assigned as a Road Crew Deputy supervising inmates who are non-violent felons assigned to work outside the facility on various clean up details in service to the community.

Deputy Troutman has since been placed on administrative leave, which is normal protocol for the jail.
