Pedestrian critically injured after being struck by car, driver charged with DUI

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A man sustained multiple injuries after being struck by a vehicle early Sunday morning.

At 12:08 a.m. Sunday, Bowling Green police responded to the 2100 block of Nashville Road after a man who was walking on the side of the road was struck by a vehicle, Bowling Green police department spokesman Officer Ronnie Ward said.

The driver of the vehicle drove off toward Campbell Lane and the victim, who suffered substantial injuries, was immediately flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. At the time of the incident, neither the victim nor a witness could provide a vehicle description, Ward said.

The city’s collision reconstruction unit was called to the scene to assist with the investigation.

Several hours later, officers were given information from Kentucky State Police about a suspect in the case.

Police determined the driver of the vehicle was Landon Michael May, 20, Ward said.

State police told Bowling Green police that May had been contacting people saying that he hit someone with his vehicle earlier in the evening, according to his arrest citation.

Police found a vehicle mirror at the scene of the incident. When police went to May’s home, they said found a car missing a mirror that matched the mirror at the scene where the pedestrian was struck, according to May’s arrest citation.

A police officer could smell alcohol on May, according to his arrest citation.

May declined to speak to police but while he was in custody en route to The Medical Center for a blood draw, he asked an officer, “where were the girl and guy walking? Did I just clip him,” according to May’s arrest citation.

May was charged with first-degree assault, leaving the scene of of an accident and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs (aggravated circumstances) first offense, according to his citation. He was lodged in the Warren County Regional Jail. His bond is set at $25,000.

Police have not released the name of the injured pedestrian or his condition.
