One Seriously Injured When Car Slams Into Apartment

Police in South Salt Lake, Utah say a 10-year-old girl was struck inside her family's apartment when an out-of-control car slammed through the wall, narrowly missing her younger siblings. KSL's Debbie Worthen reports.

(KSL/NBC News) — A 10-year-old girl was seriously injured Friday when an out-of-control car slammed into her family’s apartment in South Salt Lake, Utah.

The car wedged itself in the room, pinning the girl and narrowly missing a 7-month-old baby and three others in the apartment.

“I heard the crash and I walked up here, they were pulling people out of the building, gas was leaking, you could smell it, it was horrible, getting everybody out of the way,” Blair Phillips said.

Phillips and a neighbor helped pull the driver out of the wreckage while first responders freed the 10-year-old pinned by the car.

“I would imagine it was absolutely shocking,” South Salt Lake Police Chief Jack Carruth said.

The cause of the crash is still being investigated.

“It’s unknown why the driver of the vehicle lost control or what caused the accident itself,” Carruth said.
