Ohio River chemical spill; will it affect our local area?

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – After a train derailment which led to a chemical spill in Ohio, scientists say the local area should be unaffected.

Dr. Chris Groves and Dr. Jason Polks, professors of hydrogeology and environmental geoscience feel that the south central region will be safe. Though the Ohio River is a water source to many people, we in this area will be largely unaffected.

The water sources for our viewing area would be the Barren, Green and Kentucky River which flow into the Ohio.

This would be little to no chance of contamination to our water but the Ohio might be dealing with this problem for a bit longer. From the original sight, a “chemical plume” was able to head down stream, which over time would likely dilute. With some rain hitting over the next couple of days that could help as well.

According to Dr. Polk, post accident work just entails monitoring the issue.
