New ‘Communication Station’ inclusive sign at Roland Bland Park
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-Bowling Green Parks and Rec is taking an extra step to make sure everyone feels included on the playground.
They have introduced a Communication Station at Roland Bland Park.
The station sign shows 35 different images that people can point to to communicate, including ‘play’, ‘slide’ and ‘all done’.
Roland Blank Park was the community’s first all inclusive playground that was installed last year.
Staff hopes that the sign ensures there are no barriers to a fully inclusive visit to the park.
“It’s gonna allow you know a child who may communicate differently and a child out here at this playground to interact. It’s gonna allow them to say I have desires when I come to the playground, I have things I look forward to, I have needs just like you,” said BGPR Parks and Rec Professional Cameron Levis.
Using the symbols is a form of AAC, or augmentative and alternative communication.
