Missing for 23 years and presumed dead, investigation continues into the disappearance of Alyne Barrick
MAMMOTH CAVE, Ky. The last time Alyne Barrick was seen was on a Friday. It was otherwise a normal day. The 60-year old was planning to visit her brother in Frankfort, Ky. but never went. Then she disappeared.
Detective Wesley Medley with the Kentucky State Police has now taken over the investigation to find out what happened to Barrick 23 years ago.
“She kind of had a pattern where she would be out walking her dog. Once the neighbor didn’t see her over the weekend walking the dog. That raised some concern,” Medley said.
After neighbors didn’t see Barrick out walking her dog, as she did every day, they called the police.
“At that time, the deputy or whomever it was with the Edmonson County Sheriff’s department had went into the residence, and that’s when they suspected there was maybe some foul play involved,” Medley said.
Adults go missing often, sometimes they don’t want to be found. Detective Medley doesn’t believe that’s what happened in this case.
“I think with the evidence in this case and some of the particulars surrounding her disappearance, I personally don’t feel that’s the case,” said Medley.
If Barrick were still alive, she’d be over 80 years old right now. The former detective on the case, Scott Skaggs believes Barrick was killed by someone she knew.
“She went to the door. We feel like she answered the door. It started somewhere in the living room and ended up in the bedroom,” said Skaggs.
Skaggs believes Barrick was then wrapped in a sheet and taken out of the house. The suspect in Barrick’s case left town following her disappearance. Detectives had troubling finding him.
“We begin looking for that person, that became a quick suspect at the time, and we could not find him,” said Skaggs.
The former detective’s search for Barrick’s body led by Skaggs came up empty handed despite unique efforts to find her body.
“A physic was actually brought in, and the family asked the officer at the time that was working on the case to ride along with this physic, and nothing became of that,” said Skaggs.
Now detectives hope that someone who knows something will come forward.
“Just over time evidence washes away. Especially trace evidence like fibers, hairs, blood, anything like that,” said Medley.

“This is coming up on the 23 year anniversary so people who may have known something back then may not be around anymore, and as time goes on, people forget things,” said Medley.
