Mike and Mickeye Murphy named 2026 South Central Kentuckians of the Year

BOWLING GREEN, Ky – The Community Foundation of South Central Kentucky is happy to announce that the 2026 South Central Kentuckian of the year is Mike Murphy (posthumously) and his wife Mickeye Murphy.

This award honors the legacy of leadership, generosity, and service these two have shown in the Bowling Green and the South Central Kentucky community.

This award recognizes individuals whose lives and leadership demonstrate generosity, civic responsibility, and deep ties to the future of this region. Through their decades of involvement in the community, philanthropic and civic efforts, Mike and Mickeye Murphy have made a lasting impact by strengthening institutions, supporting people and helping the community thrive to where it can be.

Jennifer Wethington, Executive Director, said, “Mike and Mickeye Murphy represent the kind of leadership that defines South Central Kentucky. While we miss Mike dearly, his legacy lives on through the countless lives touched by their shared commitment to service. It is an honor to recognize both of them for the lasting impact they have made and continue to make on our region.”

Even after his death, Mike Murphy’s influence and commitment to the community can still be seen and felt. Both Mike and Mickeye have embodied a life of service deeply in the community, always giving back, focused on strengthening their local institutions and investing in the future of their community.

The Murphys are widely respected for their shared approach in leadership that really focuses on collaboration, stewardship and giving back.

The Community Foundation honors this award to celebrate individuals who not only respond to the demands of the community today but also focus on and look towards the long-term health and vitality of the region. The Honorees are recognized for creating such a meaningful impact on the community and encourage others to get involved in philanthropy, volunteerism, and civic leadership.

Wethington also added, “It is especially meaningful to honor Mike and Mickeye together. Their story reminds us that transformational community leadership often begins at home with shared values, generosity of spirit, and a willingness to serve quietly but faithfully.”.

On Tuesday, May 5, at 11:30 am, the recipients of the South Central Kentuckian of the Year, Mike and Mickeye Murphy, will be recognized at the Knicely Conference Center.

Proceeds from the award celebration will go towards charitable funds that strengthen nonprofits and create more opportunities for individuals in South Central Kentucky.
