Men’s Health of Bowling Green stress importance of men’s health

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – June is National Men’s Health Month, and with this week marking Men’s Health Week, healthcare providers across the country are encouraging men to prioritize both their physical and mental well-being.

In Bowling Green, one local clinic is taking a unique approach to help men take control of their health.

“You just have to do it. Make the call.”

That’s the message from Mike Curtis, founder of Men’s Health of Bowling Green, who says too many men wait until something’s seriously wrong before seeing a doctor.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • 1 in 2 men will develop cancer in their lifetime.

  • 1 in 3 live with high blood pressure.

  • Men are 50 percent more likely to die from heart disease than women.

  • Nearly 40 percent avoid going to the doctor unless absolutely necessary.

Curtis says his clinic aims to change that trend by creating a space where men feel comfortable.

“We tend to overlook our health and let things go,” Curtis said. “It’s important to bring awareness, and our practice is a little bit different. We try to make it more of a welcoming environment — less clinical, more relaxed. Some people say it feels like a men’s spa, and that’s okay. If it puts them at ease, that’s what matters.”

Curtis also said many men delay visits out of fear, shame, or simply not wanting to know the results. But regular checkups can catch problems early and make a big difference in quality — and length — of life.

“Sometimes it’s just about making the time. Sometimes it’s embarrassment. But not knowing doesn’t help anything,” Curtis said.

While physical symptoms are often what finally get men through the door, Curtis says mental health is just as critical.

“Mental health is huge. It affects everything: your relationships, your work, your body. And vice versa, physical health can impact your mental well-being,” Curtis said. “We really try to look at the full picture, and here in Bowling Green, we’re lucky to have a lot of great resources we can refer people to.”

Whether it’s a simple wellness check or a conversation you’ve been putting off, Men’s Health Month is the perfect time to take action. Because sometimes, the most important step toward better health is just showing up.
