PORTLAND, Tenn. – One man is accused of trying to break into a Portland, Tennessee home while armed with a knife.

According to the Portland Police Department, on Oct. 10, officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in progress involving a male subject allegedly armed with a knife and attempting to force entry into a residence.

Authorities say the caller stated the male subject, identified as Walter Hayes, was trying to break in by kicking the door.

Police say out of concern for the homeowner’s safety and that of the homeowner’s infant child, the victim hid with the child in a bathroom while awaiting law enforcement’s arrival.

Upon arrival, authorities say they determined Hayes had fled the scene. After ensuring the victim and the child were safe, officers say they began to search the area.

Officers say they discovered Hayes had allegedly removed and disabled the home’s doorbell security camera.

Authorities say they also determined the front door handle had been broken off during his attempts to force entry.

Due to the incident, officers say they remained on scene while the victim gathered their personal belongings. Officers say they escorted the victim and the victim’s child to a safe location.

Authorities say they spoke to Hayes over the phone and that he refused to cooperate.

Based on evidence, police say they obtained arrest warrants charging Hayes with aggravated assault (domestic related), criminal attempt to commit aggravated burglary and vandalism under $1,000.

On Oct. 14, Hayes was taken into custody and served with the outstanding warrants. He was later released on a $40,000 bond.

Hayes is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 30 at 10 a.m. in Sumner County.

The department stated, “We encourage anyone experiencing domestic violence or who believes they are in immediate danger to contact law enforcement. No one should have to live in fear for their safety or the safety of their children.”
