Logan County Humane Society update

LOGAN COUNTY, Ky. – On Saturday, a post hit Facebook that called out the Logan County government for failing to care for the local humane society, which has caused quite an uproar in the community.

News 40 reached out to former employees of the organization as well as county officials, and was only able to speak to one on the issue. The County Judge-Executive told News 40 that the county has been working with the society since the summer to try and fix many things, but as 2023 went on, things unfortunately fell off the rails. One of the most detrimental things that has impacted the society is the number of animals taken in from hoarding situations, according to Baker.

Logan County, like many other shelters across the country has been facing overcrowding issues, and then a dog infected with Parvo slipped through the cracks. By the time it was detected, that dog had already spread the disease to many others. Baker said that he has met with the board to discuss issues at least twice before the Facebook post went up, and told News 40 that above all else, he wants his community to know that he is not who social media would make him out to be.

Baker said he is looking to gather enough money to build a new place for the humane society outright and asks that the community be patient with the process as the county government works to rectify these ongoing issues.

So far, he has released emergency funds to get vaccinations and test strips for the shelter but of course more help will be needed. The judge pleaded that the community also pitch in as much as they can to help clean and feed the animals as the shelter operates as a non-profit, meaning there are very few paid employees to handle so many animals.
