RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. – The Logan County Humane Society has released a statement concerning upcoming changes beginning next month.

The humane society confirms the yearly contract between the Logan County Humane Society and the county will not be renewed as of July 1 on a yearly basis, but it will be renewed on a monthly basis.

This is due to the fact the county is going to be in charge of animal control, and a large part of the contract with the county is to perform animal control, the humane society says.

The humane society also released the rest of the following statement on their social media:

“Several of you still have many questions as do we, but at this time we can assure you that the doors of the humane society will not be closing on July 1 and the animals within our care will not be turned over to the county on said date. County funding will continue for operating animal control to the best of our abilities. We will continue to operate as usual for all strays, animal control pick-ups, adoptions and seeking rescue help to decrease the shelter population.”

The shelter clarified as intake rates rise, they will be limiting owner surrenders at this time pending their space available. This type of surrender may be placed on a waiting list until availability is open, rescuers say.

The humane society continued, stating, “We ask everyone to please have patience in this matter. “The action of the county taking over animal control is still underway. We have been informed that an officer has not been hired. Until this position is filled, we can not inform the public of any future changes that may occur. Once an animal control officer is hired, the county will be taking over all animal control responsibilities. The mission of the humane society will never change. Our main goal for our future is to work side-by-side with the county and save as many animals as possible that have been obtained by animal control, as well as continue to reduce overpopulation ensuring that every animal in our care is spayed/neutered. We will continue to seek funding/donations for those animals that have been abused and/or neglected in any way. The humane society is still a nonprofit organization in need of volunteers, not only to help at the shelter but help with organizing fundraising events, supply donations, monetary donations or direct donations towards vet expenses. We would also like to take this time to thank everyone that has reached out to the humane society willing to help and have attended our board meetings to lend a hand in any way they can and offer support.”

The Logan County Humane Society says its regularly scheduled board meetings are on the third Monday of every month at 5:15 p.m. on the second floor of the historic courthouse.

The public is invited to attend for future updates. The humane society says it can only provide answers as the county gives them more information.
