Logan County Detention Center helping inmates with new programs

LOGAN COUNTY, Ky. – In an effort to lower recidivism and improve quality of life outside of those four walls, the Logan County Detention Center is offering new programs to it’s inmates.

News 40 came to Russellville today to see the job fair that happened today, the culmination of a work ready boot camp that then Logan County Detention Center organized with the help of the South Central Workforce Development Board. Speaking to the Logan County Jailer, Joshua Toomey, he said he doesn’t want his job to be just about housing the inmates but trying to make sure they don’t come back.

Toomey said in an interview “I don’t want them just staring at four walls, that’s not going to help them. I want to offer educational opportunities and more programs to help them succeed.” This is appreciated by one inmate in particular, who is currently looking at parole.

Jeff Perkins who is serving an 18 month sentence told News 40 “Toomey coming in here and offering these classes and wanting change is great, he wants everyone to change for the better and it’s a really good thing.” Perkins went on to say that coming out of an institution is a big change and can be hard because people are essentially starting over depending on how long their sentence is and he hopes that more facilities across the world start to explore this way of thinking.
