Local blood shortages impact national blood supply
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The blood shortage we see here locally is a national issue.
With donations of blood dropping in the summer and sickness rising, the need for blood is greater than before.
Most people decide to give blood when there is a need, and the need is now. Blood Assurance wants to encourage people to be proactive, not reactive.
Brooke Katz, media relations coordinator of Blood Assurance, tells us, “It’s short on any given day of the year just because we have so few donations out of all the people who are healthy enough to donate. Only about 3% do. And we know that people understand the importance of it. You know, we see it after tornadoes or mass shootings or those big tragic accidents.”
There are several incentives that blood assurance offers to those who donate blood, and if you’re a business or nonprofit, you can also put on a blood drive.
