Little Learners bus teaches kids ‘on the go’

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-It’s not your average school bus.

“He gets very excited whenever he sees a school bus now, starts pointing them out, asks when we can go to the green school bus and talks about Mrs. Hargett constantly,” said parent Malia McCloud.

Warren County Public School’s Little Learners bus has a classroom inside of it!

The teacher, Mrs. Hargett, invites children ages 0 to 5 onto the bus twice a week

“Just last week when a little boy came for the first time he just kept saying wow wow and he loved being here, just a shock that it’s not just a school bus but a learning opportunity too,” said Hargett.

The hour-long lesson reaches kids that otherwise may not be in school. 91% of the kids leave the bus kindergarten ready after completing a term.

“We always have literacy, numeracy, and a social emotional lesson and free play,” said Hargett.

The kids look forward to each session on the bus.

“To the school bus. I’m gonna play with my friends,” said student Ezra James.

The bus also targets refugee communities to help them get accustomed to school before actually stepping foot in the building.

“We are able to take the bus into their apartment complexes and neighborhoods to be able to reach them, we go door to door letting them know about it. If we do not have an interpreter with us we can just show them a picture of the bus and use the language line any way possible to help spread the word,” said Hargett.
