Kentucky Wildfire Hazard Season

KENTUCKY – Across the Bluegrass, the Division of Forestry is trying to get the word out that this is a dangerous time of year.

Wildfire season is here and statewide, you are not to do any kind of burning outside between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. or within 150 feet of any woodland/brushland unless the ground is covered with snow. This is an effort to curb wildfire outbreaks, naturally.

Steve Kull, an environmental consultant with the forestry division said outside of those hours, the hope is that the sun and wind will not be as intense. Kull said even with the large amounts of rain recieved late last week, all it takes is a little sun and wind to dry out the top of the forest floor.

Breaking the burn restriction for this time of year comes with some legal issues as well. Kull said individuals from the division of forestry are able to write citations ranging anywhere from 100 to 500 dollars. It is also encouraged to report any arson you see to the authorities or the forestry division itself.
