Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 3 Traffic Impact Report For Jan. 15 Through Jan. 22
The District 3 area serves Allen, Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Logan, Metcalfe, Monroe, Simpson, Todd and Warren Counties
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (Jan. 15, 2021) – The expected traffic impacts in the District 3 area for Jan. 15 through Jan. 22 are listed below. All work is subject to change.
Interstate 65
Operation Pride has begun working on landscaping projects at several exits on I-65 in Bowling Green. The ramps will remain open during the project, but crews will be working close to the road with some ramp narrowing possible throughout the process.
Interstate 165
A project to upgrade the Interstate 165 interchange with U.S. 231 Morgantown Road at Exit 7 in Bowling Green has started. The improvements to the interchange are part of the I-65 Spur requirements that upgraded the William H. Natcher Parkway to I-165 William H. Natcher Expressway in 2019. The current ramps were designed in a cloverleaf formation that serviced the old tollbooth plaza that no longer exists. New ramps will be constructed as a standard diamond interchange with upgraded LED lighting. The old ramps will be removed once construction of the new ramps is complete. The current bridge will remain and no new bridge is being built. Motorists should expect lane closures and lane shifts that will take place at different times throughout the construction process. The exit and bridge will remain open through the entire construction period
Allen County
Old Walnut Trail Road – A project to replace the bridge over West Bays Fork continues. The old bridge will remain open during construction of the new bridge.
The low water crossing on KY 585 Old Franklin Road at Trammel Creek in Allen County will close beginning Friday, Jan. 15. Following a statewide load rating analysis of select steel culverts, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) bridge preservation engineers determined the closure was necessary due to deterioration of the steel pipes and insufficient supporting material above the pipes. The structure will temporarily close to all traffic for the public’s safety.
“It is never a casual decision for us to tell a community we are closing a bridge, and we recognize the inconvenience this creates for motorists on KY 585 and especially the Red Hill Mennonite community,” said Joe Plunk, KYTC District 3 Engineer. “KYTC is already working on plans to repair or replace the structure as soon as possible.”
The duration of the closure will be determined once restoration plans are confirmed. Signs and barricades will be posted. Traffic should detour using KY 622 and KY 100. Motorists are advised to plan more time for routine commutes as the detour will add a significant amount of travel time and traffic is expected to increase on the detour routes during the closure. Motorists should drive with caution and watch for horse and buggy traffic.
A low-water crossing provides a roadway over a stream and can become quickly impassable when the stream rises.
The low water crossing on KY 585 was built in 1989 after the previous structure washed out. About 850 vehicles per day drive over the crossing plus a number of horse and buggies.
