Kentucky State Police to participate in Click It or Ticket effort
FRANKFORT, Ky. – With summer break quickly approaching and many Kentuckians expected to travel ahead of Memorial Day, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the Office of Highway Safety are urging locals to drive safely.
Starting May 12 and running until June 1, the annual “Click It or Ticket” effort will take place. This annual effort encourages all drivers to buckle up before hitting the road.
“It only takes two seconds to fasten your seat belt – and those two seconds could save your life,” Gov. Andy Beshear said. “We want everyone to buckle up, every trip. Let’s look out for one another and make sure we all get to where we’re going and come back home, safely.”
Last year, Kentucky had 707 road-related deaths in the Commonwealth, and nearly half of those who died were either not wearing a seat belt or not properly restrained in a car seat. Of those, officials say 471 were killed in motor vehicle crashes.
In addition, the time of day may play a factor.
According to the NHTSA, fatal crashes nationwide are three times higher during nighttime hours compared to daytime.
Officials say of the 471 occupants killed in motor vehicle crashes, at least 185 took place at night.
