Kentucky General Assembly passes bill banning transgender girls from sports
FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky General Assembly has passed SB 83, also known as the Save Women’s Sports Act, a bill barring transgender girls from participating in sports, according to a release by the Fairness Campaign.
According to the Kentucky General Assembly website, the bill would prohibit transgender students identifying as female from participating in athletic teams, activities and sports designated for girls.
“Transgender kids want the same things all children do—to play with their friends, get a good education and pursue their passions, including sports,” said Fairness Campaign Executive Director Chris Hartman. “Like all kids, they deserve the opportunity to participate on sports teams that help them stay active, bring them joy and fulfillment, and teach them about teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship.”
Fairness now calls on Gov. Andy Beshear to veto the measure.
The bill now heads to Beshear’s desk to be signed into law or vetoed.
