Inmate program set up to provide KY REAL ID to people getting out of jail

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – On Friday, the Kentucky Department of Corrections announced a partnership with state agencies to provide state inmates with identification cards.

Only one jail is participating in the new pilot program and that is the Warren County Regional Jail.

Three state prisons are also participating.

The jail was chosen because since 2018, they have been operating a similar program for their inmates already having provided hundreds of ID’s to inmates already.

Warren County Jailer Stephen Harmon is excited to work with the local Kentucky Department of Transportation REAL ID center to continue its efforts in this crucial part of re-entry Services.

“We do several thing to assist inmates that are being released back into society, but one of the most important is providing an ID. You can’t rent an apartment, you can’t get a job, you can’t, you know, provide law enforcement with your credentials if you don’t have an ID. So, this is something we have worked on since 2018 and we really believe in it and know that it is successful and this is just building on that,” said Harmon.

The program will begin officially in the next few months.
