Idaho officer “Mistakenly” shoots armed homeowner
(KPVI/NBC News) An Idaho Falls man is dead after he was shot by a police officer who mistook him for a suspect who ran from a traffic stop.
Idaho Falls Police Chief Bryce Johnson say it began when a Bonneville County deputy pulled over a car and one of the two people inside ran from the scene.
Idaho Falls Police arrived on scene and were able to identify the suspect, who had multiple outstanding warrants.
The suspect sent his GPS location through his phone to the other person in the car, who then shared it with officers.
That led police to surround a nearby home.
“Officers heard yelling and approached the backyard, where they encountered a man wearing a black shirt, armed with a firearm. Officers gave instructions for the man to drop the gun. We do not currently have the answers as to what exactly occurred in these moments. We do know during this interaction an Idaho Falls police officer discharged his service weapon, firing one shot which struck the man. Officers attempted life-saving measures, but they were unsuccessful,” Chief Johnson said.
The man died and police soon discovered it was not the suspect they were looking for.
