GENEVA (AP) — The World Trade Organization chief has appealed to member states to present and negotiate over a text that could lead to a temporary easing of trade rules that protect COVID-19 vaccine technology. This could help ramp up production of doses at a time of vast inequality of access and soaring needs. The comments from Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala at a closed-door meeting of ambassadors came as developing and developed countries, which have been at odds over the issue, expressed commonality toward getting more coronavirus vaccines to countries in need, spokesman Keith Rockwell said.
