Wait a minute: Postponements test skiers’ patience at worlds

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Mikaela Shiffrin hates it. Marta Bassino gets nervous about it. But Michelle Gisin doesn’t mind. It’s the waiting. Athletes at the skiing world championships have had their patience and not their racing skills tested with all four events on the opening three days postponed because of bad weather. Skiers react differently to the delays. The extended wait for Tuesday’s scheduled super-G became a mental struggle for Bassino. Defending super-G world champion Shiffrin says waiting “is the hardest thing about races.” But Tamara Tippler enjoyed an espresso during the holdup at the start. She says ”you can’t beat the weather.”
