MLB-RANGERS-DAVIS
Rangers activate Khris Davis for 1st time since Andrus deal
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers have slugger Khris Davis on their active roster for the first time since acquiring him in the February trade that sent longtime shortstop Elvis Andrus to Oakland.
Davis was activated from the injured list before Saturday night’s game against Seattle. The outfielder/designated hitter wasn’t in the starting lineup.
Davis started the season on the injured list because of a left quad strain suffered in a spring training game March 23.
The Rangers optioned outfielder Eli White to Triple-A Round Rock. White was hitting .127 with only one hit his last 30 at-bats.
VIRUS OUTBREAK-NHL
NHL relaxes virus protocols for vaccinated playoff teams
UNDATED (AP) — The NHL is relaxing virus protocols for teams that reach a threshold for vaccination, just in time for the playoffs.
The changes are outlined in a memo viewed by The Associated Press that the league sent to teams and players Friday night. The new protocols take hold once 85% or more of the traveling party has been fully vaccinated. For a team with 56 members in its traveling party, 48 would need to be fully vaccinated.
The NHL is the last of the major four North American pro sports leagues to announce plans to relax virus protocols for teams based on vaccination levels. This move is likely to affect the 12 U.S. playoff teams first because vaccinations have lagged for those in Canada.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL-ALABAMA-TO’O TO’O
Tennessee’s top tackler transferring to rival Alabama
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — The University of Tennessee’s leading tackler is heading to rival Alabama. Junior linebacker Henry To’o To’o has announced on social media that he is transferring to the defending national champions.
He would likely be a candidate to replace starting inside linebacker Dylan Moses.
To’o To’o had 148 tackles over his first two seasons with the Volunteers, leading the team with 76 tackles and 10 stops for a loss as a sophomore.
A new NCAA policy allows players to transfer once and be eligible to play immediately. However, the Southeastern Conference currently requires intraconference transfers to sit out a season.
PGA-WELLS FARGO-DeCHAMBEAU
DeChambeau takes 1,800-mile detour between rounds at Quail
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Bryson DeChambeau thought he had missed the cut in the Wells Fargo Championship. By the time he realized he was still in the tournament in North Carolina, he was already back home in Dallas.
The former U.S. Open champion took a private flight out early Saturday morning and got back to Quail Hollow with about an hour to spare. And then he shot a 68 with a double bogey on the last hole. It was a wild 24 hours that included an 1,870-mile round trip between the second and third rounds.
DeChambeau played the third round with British Open champion Shane Lowry, who also thought he was going to miss the cut when he finished at 2-over 144 on Friday.
F1-SPANISH GP
Hamilton tops qualifying at Spanish GP for 100th pole
MONTMELÓ, Spain (AP) — Lewis Hamilton has won his 100th career pole position after barely edging Max Verstappen to the fastest time in qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix.
Hamilton pushed his Mercedes to a flying lap of 1 minute, 16.74 seconds. Verstappen in his Red Bull was only 0.03 seconds behind.
Hamilton leads leads Verstappen by eight points in the Formula One standings. Hamilton won the season opener in Bahrain and last week’s race in Portugal. Verstappen won the season’s second race in Italy.
Hamilton’s milestone increases the distance between his mark and Michael Schumacher’s 68 poles in second place all-time.
