Knicks extend win streak to 9

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Knicks have continued their longest winning streak in about eight years, while the Philadelphia 76ers have fallen another half-game off the NBA’s Eastern Conference lead.

It’s a nine-game winning streak for the Knicks after Julius Randle led them to a 120-103 win over the Raptors. Randle delivered 31 points and 10 rebounds for the Knicks, who are on their longest winning streak since a 13-game run during the 2012-13 season.

RJ Barrett added 25 points and 12 boards, while Derrick Rose added 19 to help New York take a firmer grip of fourth place in the East.

Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH’-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON’-poh) delivered 24 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists in just 24 minutes as the Bucks blasted the 76ers, 132-94. Antetokounmpo passed Glenn Robinson for second on the team’s all-time scoring list, moving about 2,200 points behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Bobby Portis added 17 points to help Milwaukee beat the 76ers for the second time in three days.

The Sixers played without Joel Embiid (joh-EHL’ ehm-BEED’) and absorbed their fourth straight loss to fall one game behind the East-leading Nets.

Checking out Saturday’s NBA action:

— The Heat held off the Bulls, 106-101 as Duncan Robinson made seven 3-pointers and scored 23 points. Robinson was among four Miami players with at least 20 points, but the Heat saw a 24-point lead cut to as little as two in the closing moments. Kendrick Nunn furnished 22 points, Jimmy Butler had 20 and Bam Adebayo (ad-eh-BY’-oh) added 20 with 10 assists.

— Malcolm Brogdon scored 26 points, Caris LeVert had 25 and the Pacers had a late 12-0 run to beat the Pistons, 115-109. Edmond Sumner scored 14 of his 22 points in the first quarter to help the Pacers take a 35-25 lead. Indiana swept the season series from Detroit for the first time since 2016-17

Clifford tests positive for coronavirus

UNDATED (AP) — Orlando Magic head coach Steve Clifford has tested positive for coronavirus, though he and the team are waiting on re-tests before determining if he will have to miss time.

Clifford does not expect to be cleared in time for Sunday’s home game against Indiana, though no final determination has been made yet.

Clifford has received both doses of the Moderna vaccine, getting the second one on Thursday.

Pens beat Devils

UNDATED (AP) — The Washington Capitals kept their lead in the NHL’s East Division, but there’s a new club that’s taken over second place.

Daniel Sprong scored twice and Evgeny Kutznetsov had a goal and two assists as the Caps beat the Islanders for the second time in three nights, 6-3. Sprong was on the top line in place of Alex Ovechkin, who sat out the game wiht a lower-body injury.

Nic Dowd, Garnet Hathaway and T.J. Oshie (OH’-shee) also scored as the Capitals stayed one point ahead of Pittsburgh and three ahead of the Isles.

The Penguins jumped ahead of the Islanders as Sidney Crosby and Bryan Rust each scored their 20th goal of the season in a 4-2 victory over the Devils. Crosby’s empty-netter allowed him to clinch a 16th season of averaging at least a point a game, joining Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky.

Jared McCann scored a power-play goal for the Penguins, who have 13 wins and points in 15 of their last 18 games overall.

Elsewhere on NHL ice:

— Aleksander Barkov scored 24 seconds into overtime to give the Panthers a 4-3 win over the Hurricanes. Florida’s MacKenzie Weegar had a goal and two assists to help the Panthers win for just the second time in eight meetings against Carolina. Florida also pulled within one point of the Central Division-leading Canes, although Carolina has two games in hand.

— Ryan O’Reilly had a hat trick as the Blues beat the Avalanche for the first time in their last six meetings, 5-3. Mike Hoffman and Ivan Barbashev also scored for St. Louis and Jordan Binnington made 28 saves as the Blues snapped a three-game skid. Nathan MacKinnon scored a pair of goals for the Avs, who ended a five-game winning streak and lost for just the second time in regulation since March 8.

— The Stars beat the Red Wings, 2-1 on Jamie Benn’s goal 32 seconds into overtime. Dallas outshot Detroit by more than three times but trailed until Mark Pysyk made it 1-all early in the third. Anton Khudobin (hoo-DOH’-bihn) stopped 16 shots for the Stars, while Detroit netminder Jonathan Bernier (BURN’-yay) had a season-high 50 saves.

— Mitch Marner scored his 100th NHL goal and the Maple Leafs stretched their lead in the North Division to eight points over Winnipeg by downing the Jets, 4-1. John Tavares and Joe Thornton also tallied, Alexander Kerfoot added an empty-netter and Jack Campbell made 25 saves for Toronto. Thornton, at 41 years, 296 days, became the oldest player in Leafs franchise history to score.

— Johnny Gaudreau scored twice as the Flames beat the Canadiens for the second straight night, 5-2. Milan Lucic (LOO’-cheech), Brett Ritchie and Rasmus Andersson also scored and Jacob Markstrom stopped 30 shots as Calgary improved to 6-1 versus Montreal this season. The Habs hold the fourth and final playoff spot in the North Division, four points ahead of Calgary with a game in hand.

M’s, A’s win again

UNDATED (AP) — The Seattle Mariners continue to be among the nicest surprises during the early stages of the major league season, while the AL West-rival Oakland Athletics remain the hottest team.

Kyle Seager fell a homer shy of the cycle and Chris Flexen worked seven strong innings as the Mariners beat the Red Sox for the second time in three days, 8-2. Seager singled, doubled and tripled in his first three at-bats while driving in three. He had two chances to complete the cycle before striking out and fouling out.

Flexen struck out seven while limiting the Red Sox to one run and four hits, helping the M’s improve to 13-8.

The A’s earned their 13th straight victory since an 0-6 start as Jed Lowrie hit a three-run homer in their 7-2 victory over the Orioles. Matt Olson and Mark Canha had two hits and two RBIs apiece for Oakland, which enjoys its third-longest winning streak.

Chris Bassitt allowed two runs and eight hits with one walk over six innings to get the win.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Gerrit Cole was one pitch better than Shane Bieber in a heavyweight matchup of aces as Rougned Odor (ROOG’-nehd oh-DOHR’) and Aaron Hicks homered off Cleveland’s Cy Young winner in the fifth inning, giving the Yankees a 2-1 win over the Indians. Cole struck out 11 and allowed just three hits in seven innings to beat Bieber in a rematch of their meeting in last year’s playoffs.

— Third baseman Cavan Biggio (KAV’-an BIH’-zhee-oh) let a grounder go between his legs in the eighth inning, allowing the tiebreaking run to score in the Rays’ 5-3 win over the Blue Jays. Mark Brosseau and Mike Zunino homered for the Rays, who overcame Randal Grichuk’s (GRIH’-chuhks) three-run blast in ending a four-game losing streak.

— The White Sox blew a ninth-inning lead before Nick Madrigal provided a game-ending double to complete Chicago’s 2-1 win over the Rangers. Willie Calhoun tied it in the ninth with his first homer of the season, a drive off Liam off Hendriks.

— The Astros blew out the Angels, 16-2 as Kent Emanuel worked 8 2/3 innings in relief in his major league debut after starter Jake Odorizzi left the game. Alex Bregman crushed a three-run homer, Yordan (yohr-DAHN’) Alvarez had a season-high four RBIs, Carlos Correa homered among his three hits and Michael Brantley doubled three times for Houston.

— Brady Singer tossed three-hit ball while fanning eight over seven innings of the Royals’ 2-1 win over the Tigers. A pair of fifth-inning miscues allowed Kansas City to score twice before Willi Castro homered for Detroit to cap the scoring.

— The Pirates were 6-2 winners over the Twins as Michael Perez delivered three hits and three RBIs. Trevor Cahill permitted one run and two hits in six innings, his longest outing in almost two years.

— Pinch-hitter Manny Piña (PEEN’-yah) launched a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the seventh inning to send the Brewers past the Cubs, 4-3. Keston Hiura (HEEr’-uh) had three hits and Kolten Wong finished with two as the Brewers bounced back from a 15-2 loss in the series opener Friday.

— John Gant earned his first victory as a starter since 2018 by throwing six innings of three-hit ball in the Cardinals’ 2-0 shutout of the Reds. Andrew Knizner and Nolan Arenado (ar-eh-NAH’-doh) drove in the runs and Dylan Carlson added three singles as the Cards handed Cincinnati its sixth straight loss.

— Joe Ross tossed six solid innings and helped himself with an RBI single as the Nationals beat the Mets, 7-1. Yadiel Hernandez had two hits and two RBIs after the 33-year-old rookie entered with six hits in 36 career at-bats.

— The Diamondbacks and Braves were postponed by inclement weather in Atlanta, setting up a Sunday doubleheader.

Altuve waits to return after positive COVID-19 test

UNDATED (AP) — Astros second baseman Jose Altuve (al-TOO’-vay) says he tested positive for COVID-19 but he never felt bad and hopes to return to the lineup soon.

The 2017 AL MVP was among five Astros placed on the COVID-19 list on April 14. The other four players returned to the roster within a few days, but Altuve remained on the list until Friday.

Altuve says he received the first dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine before testing positive, and that he has no idea how he contracted the virus.

In other MLB news:

— Astros newcomer Jake Odorizzi (oh-duh-REE’-zee) exited his start against the Angels after just five pitches because of tightness in his right forearm. Odorizzi entered the game 0-2 with a 10.57 ERA in two starts this season.

— Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich (YEH’-lihch) is returning to Milwaukee for an MRI on his strained lower back. The 2018 NL MVP had been eligible to be activated from the injured list for this weekend’s series with the Chicago Cubs. Manager Craig Counsell says that Yelich hit a “plateau” in his recovery.

PGA-ZURICH CLASSIC

Oosthuizen-Schwartzel surge to 3rd-round lead

AVONDALE, La. (AP) — Louis Oosthuizen (WUHST’-hy-zehn) and Charl Schwartzel birdied six of their final eight holes Saturday to shoot a 9-under 63 and take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Zurich Classic. The South African duo are at 19-under.

Australians Marc Leishman (LEESH’-muhn) and Cameron Smith also shot a 63 in the best-ball round to move into a tie for second at 18 under with Cameron Champ and Tony Finau (FEE’-now), who shot a 67.

The tournament will close with an alternate-shot round.

LPGA-LA OPEN

Henderson rallies in LA

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Brooke Henderson rallied to win the HUGEL Air Premia LA Open for her 10th LPGA Tour title.

Henderson chipped in for birdie on the par-3 12th in an early back-nine burst and getting up-and-down for par on the last.

Four strokes behind leader Jessica Korda and three back of top-ranked Jin Young Ko entering the final round at Wilshire Country Club, Henderson closed with her second straight 4-under 67 for a one-stroke victory over Korda.
