President Joe Biden’s nominee for education secretary is pledging to counter what he calls the “frustration and distrust and fear” about reopening schools in the middle of a pandemic. Miguel Cardona says he’ll do that with clear guidance, expanded virus testing and a call for teachers to be prioritized in vaccine rollout plans. But at a Senate hearing Wednesday, Cardona stopped short of saying all teachers should receive vaccines before schools reopen. That’s a demand made by some unions. Instead he said teachers should be prioritized in vaccination plans. The 45-year-old Cardona became Connecticut’s state education chief in 2019 after spending years as a teacher and administrator in the public school district in Meriden, Connecticut.
