Call it a career: MLB ump Winters opted out in ’20, now done

Longtime Major League Baseball umpire Mike Winters is calling it a career. The 62-year-old Winters was among 12 big league umps who opted out last season over coronavirus concerns. Winters worked 32 years in the majors and handled over 3,800 games in the regular season. He had an additional 103 games in the postseason, including four World Series assignments. Winters was one of the eight crew chiefs who opted out last season. No official word yet on whether any other umpires will follow Winters into retirement this year.
