Benedek, 3-time Olympic water polo champ from Hungary, dies
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Three-time Olympic water polo champion Tibor Benedek had died. He was 47. Benedek captained and later coached Hungary’s national team. His death was announced by the Hungarian water polo federation. Benedek was a prolific scorer and won dozens of national and international titles with Hungary and club teams. He retired from all sporting activities in May because of an undisclosed illness. Benedek won Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2004 and 2008. He coached Hungary to the 2013 world championship title. He was extremely popular in Hungary and known for his total dedication to the sport and unyielding willpower.
