How spring break travel plans could impact your vacation
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Spring break is rapidly approaching for students all across Kentucky, and families are making their final preparations for their spring vacations.
Traveling is taken a hit this year when it comes to prices with global issues like the conflict with Iran causing gas prices to rise affecting not just fuel for your car but diesel and jet fuel as well. The current government shutdown is also causing massive issues at airports all across the country with some TSA agents quitting, causing very long lines and wait times.
AAA says you might have to take extra precautions when trying to catch your flight.
“The airports are extremely busy, and we all know from watching the news reports that there are long, long lines at the TSA right now because of the government shutdown. So AAA recommends a couple of things. If you’re flying download your airlines app because that will keep you informed of any changes, whether it’s a gate, whether it’s a delay, or hopefully not even a cancellation. And we usually recommend that you get to the airport two hours ahead for and domestic flight, three hours for an international flight, but because of these delays you’re going to want to add an hour to those times,” said Lynda Lambert with AAA East Central.
Studies are showing that regardless of the price increase in travel Americans are pinching pennies elsewhere to save money for their spring break trips. But what can vacationers do to save even more money when they head out on their vacation.
“First and foremost, don’t speed. Speeding really decreases your fuel efficiency, especially when you drive over 50 miles an hour. If you’re driving a van or a truck and hauling around heavy items, get rid of those for now because that also increases the drag on your engine. Avoid jackrabbit stops and starts. Try to drive as smoothly as possible. And on that note, cruise control can really come in handy,” Lambert said
To find the best deals AAA recommends planning your trips out months in advance and using travel advisors who may have access to deals that you may not.
