House on the Hill celebrates five years of growth

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – House on the Hill is celebrating five years, and it is expanding in more ways than one.

Through its housing program, it’s grocery store program has expanded and will travel throughout Warren County and surrounding counties.

Joel Hawkins, the executive director at House on the Hill, says, “We do have a lot of families, individuals in our community who are in need. With the economy. It’s just those people who are making minimum wage. They’re squeezed really hard when it comes to going to the grocery store.“

The organization not only helps the people in the community but it’s also an inspiration for volunteers.

Brady Priest a volunteer, says, “I already feel like I’ve learned so much about just like the needs that people have in Bowling Green and how they are addressed but so this has been a good learning experience to like, see how people kind of get off the ground with stuff like that.”

With the state of the world and the uncertainty surrounding daily necessities, having people to pour into those in need can provide peace of mind.

Brady says, “I don’t think that the government is really going to do that for us. And a reliable way. And we have each other. And I think that it’s important to, like, keep these organizations strong, because that is what that’s what we got. That’s all we have. That’s all we have.”

Creating a space for people to rely on the support of the community is more than volunteering, it serves as motivation.

Hawkins also says, “They don’t need a handout, but they need a handout. And so, that’s the need that we have found. But we also know just because we have great volunteers, that there are people in our community. And it’s really what our community is all about. I feel like they want to help each other. And so having a space for volunteers to come to and serve their community and help others in need. That’s why we’re here. And again, that’s why we’ve grown.”
