Helton and Chesney speak ahead of 2024 Boca Raton Bowl matchup between Tops and Dukes
Boca Raton, FL – Saturday afternoon, following the WKU football team’s flight to Florida, head coach Tyson Helton met up with James Madison football head coach Bob Chesney and Boca Raton Bowl executive director Doug Mosley for an introductory press conference.
Wednesday will mark the first time the two programs will meet, but the bowl history for both is very different.
The Tops have been bowl game regulars under Helton, making the postseason in all six seasons of his tenure, but the Dukes are eyeing their first ever bowl win, following a move from FCS to FBS in recent years.
Boca Raton is also a familiar location for WKU, as the team has now travelled to South Florida three times since 2016, with the prior two instances resulting in wins over Memphis (2016) and Appalachian State (2021).
The matchup comes following a large amount of Hilltoppers entering the transfer portal, including starting quarterback Caden Veltkamp, but Saturday Helton shared that Veltkamp will play in the upcoming bowl game, along with many others who have entered the portal.
