Grant funding available for Kentucky community projects using recycled tires

FRANKFORT, Ky. – On Monday, Team Kentucky announced proposals are being accepted for community projects that promote the use of recycled Kentucky waste tires to support outdoor activities.

Projects can include landscape mulch projects, walking trails, poured-in-place playgrounds, sidewalks or other surfaces, horse trailer or stall mats, tree wells, picnic tables, benches and more, according to the Commonwealth of Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet.

“This has become one of our most popular grant programs,” said Energy and Environment Cabinet secretary Rebecca Goodman. “It decreases the amount of waste in our landfills, lowers the emissions caused by producing new materials for the same projects, and promotes a more effective alternative for our communities.”

The cabinet says projects that are not eligible include athletic field or loose crumb-rubber playground applications, tire-derived aggregate, tire-derived fuel, rubber-modified asphalt or civil engineering projects.

Grant funding comes from the Waste Tire Trust Fund, the cabinet says.

The applicant will provide matching funds equal to at least 25% of the project cost.

Applications must be received by 4:30 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, April 1 via email to lisa.evans@ky.gov. The application and any supporting documentation are required for the project to be considered for funding, the cabinet says.
