Gov. Andy Beshear declares state of emergency due to winter storms

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Gov. Andy Beshear has declared a state of emergency as a result of winter storm conditions in the commonwealth.

According to a release, this relates to the “severe temperature decreases,” as well as snow and ice that are expected in multiple locations.

The governor’s office is reminding the public the storms could potentially disrupt utility systems and impact roads.

This state of emergency will allow for state resources to be activated, including Kentucky Emergency Management teams, to help our communities.

“We continue to ask Kentuckians to stay weather-aware as snow accumulation and below-freezing temperatures continue to sweep through the commonwealth,” Beshear said. “Please check goky.ky.gov before you travel, and check in on your neighbors, loved ones and pets.”

The Warren County Sheriff’s Office and several local agencies in Bowling Green and Warren County are warning that road conditions are slick and becoming snow covered. Drivers are encouraged to avoid travel if possible.

If you or someone you know face an emergency during dangerous temperatures tonight or this week, you may contact the WCSO at 270-843-1633 at extensions #3 for a ride to a warming station. The Bowling Green Police Department is also assisting if you see a member of the unhoused population struggling during this time.

Please remember to let faucets drip to avoid frozen pipes or pipe bursts, and review safety guidance on portable generators and indoor space heaters.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet additionally says District 3 crews spent time Saturday and Sunday to prepare for the incoming winter weather system. All routes were treated with anti-icing, according to KYTC.
