Glasgow Fire Department station 2 celebrates 50 years
GLASGOW, Ky. – Before the Glasgow Fire Department was established in 1884, the city relied on a community-run bucket brigade to battle flames.
What began as a small group of volunteers has evolved into a modern department that continues to grow and serve its residents. Over the last 50 years, the city’s fire protection has made major strides, especially since the opening of its second fire station.
It’s been five decades since that expansion, a move that allowed the department to better reach and protect the community.
Chief Lucas Tinsley said today’s department stands on the hard work of those who came before them.
“I like to think that we are building on a strong foundation,” Tinsley said. “The guys and girls that came before us laid the foundation early on, all the way back to when that bucket brigade was formed.”
Tinsley said his goal is to make past firefighters proud of the department’s direction. The Glasgow Fire Department now responds to a wide range of emergencies beyond fires, from medical calls to traffic accidents. “A lot of adrenaline typically depends on the severity of the incident,” one firefighter said. “Every situation is a little different.”
Generations of firefighters have shaped the department’s legacy, impacting lives both in the past and present. Tinsley said the department’s current team carries that same spirit of dedication.
“The group we have here is outstanding. I love these guys,” he said. “The job is not always easy and can be very dangerous, but we expect everyone to stay safe and help as much as they can.”
As Glasgow celebrates 50 years since opening its second station, firefighters say they’re proud to continue a long tradition of service — one that began with buckets and courage nearly a century and a half ago.
